The holiday season has just come to a start, different families around the globe celebrate it differently. Lots of families celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or  Kwanzaa but there are many holidays. Some people might not even celebrate anything at all. The holiday season is filled with presents and gifts but most importantly family. During the Coronavirus pandemic, visiting family has been harder to do, so for winter break, some people are becoming more creative. We asked students from the Manassas Park Middle School (MPMS) what they will be doing over the holiday break.

We sent out a Google Form with the following questions:

  •  What are your holiday plans this year?

  • Are there any traditions you have, if so will you be able to do them?

  • What holiday do you celebrate?

Editor’s Note: This story was written prior to Winter Break, but unfortunately was not able to be published in time. We still wanted to share it with our readers, however, so please enjoy the article!

From the results of the form, most of the people said they were going to stay inside with their family this year, while others said they would be visiting family and friends but with safety precautions. For traditions, there were a wide variety of different things people did; some watched movies until midnight, and others had a feast on Christmas Eve. On the form many people said they celebrated Christmas, 3 people picked “other” saying they celebrated Eid al-Fitr, Los Tres Reyes or just didn’t celebrate Christmas traditionally.

The coronavirus has held back a lot of school traditions, including the winter choir concert, Christmas plays, One Act, even some parades. A lot of people are devastated about this, but they might plan on making an online concert. These events have been canceled for our safety, which is seen as more important than fun activities or events, especially during the pandemic. Hopefully when the pandemic is over these traditions can be continued. The coronavirus may have canceled and postponed a lot of events, but the holidays can still be enjoyable. Whether there are traditions or not, we still have a family.

Every student from the Manassas Park City Schools has their holidays they celebrate as well as traditions.  The holidays are a special time for some people, students, and teachers. Sadly because of the virus, the holiday season hasn’t been the same. 2020 is coming to an end, this year has been very crazy and unpredictable. Without the technology we have today, we wouldn’t be able to be in touch with our teachers and family, and we are so glad for that. This year may be pretty rough for everyone but hopefully, 2021 will be a better year.

Happy Holidays from the Cougar Express staff!
